Authorities are searching for the driver of a car who fatally struck a pedestrian who was lying on U.S. 301 early today in Wimauma.

Anthony James Griffin, 24, of Apollo Beach, was in the northbound lane, just south of Stanford Road, at 1:41 a.m., when a vehicle struck him and continued driving northbound, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Griffin died at the scene. Investigators do not know why he was lying in the road.

Car parts found at the scene indicate the car was a white 2006-09 Chrysler PT Cruiser that would have sustained damage to the lower front bumper cover and would be missing part of the inner wheel liner.
